Coils and Contraceptive Implants

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) Clinics

Need a contraceptive coil or implant fitted, replaced or removed?

Our PCN LARC Clinics provide appointments for patients registered with one of our nine GP practices. We offer dedicated appointments for coil and contraceptive implant care, including fitting, replacement and removal.

Clinics are available in Moreton and Wallasey, including evening appointments to make accessing contraception more convenient.

What is LARC?

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) describes contraceptive methods that provide effective protection against pregnancy without you needing to remember to take contraception every day.

Our LARC service supports two main types of contraception:

Coils

There are two main types of contraceptive coil:

Copper IUD
A small device placed inside the womb that prevents pregnancy without using hormones.

Hormonal IUS
A small device placed inside the womb that releases a hormone to prevent pregnancy.

Both can provide contraception for several years, depending on the type used.

Contraceptive implant

The contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod placed under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a hormone to prevent pregnancy and provides long-lasting contraception.

If you’re unsure which option may be right for you, a healthcare professional can discuss your choices with you.

What can our LARC clinic help with?

Our dedicated clinic can provide appointments for:

  • Coil fitting
  • Coil replacement
  • Coil removal
  • Contraceptive implant fitting
  • Contraceptive implant replacement
  • Contraceptive implant removal

Your healthcare professional will discuss your circumstances and contraception options with you and make sure the appropriate arrangements are in place before your procedure.

Who can use the service?

The PCN LARC Clinic is available to patients registered with one of the nine GP practices within the Moreton & Meols and Wallasey Wellbeing PCNs.

If you are registered with one of our practices and would like to find out whether the service is suitable for you, you can request contact from the LARC team using the form below.

Clinic times

Our LARC clinics currently run:

Monday and Thursday
4:00pm – 6:30pm

Appointments are available at practices across Moreton and Wallasey.

The location of your appointment will be confirmed when your appointment is arranged.

Before your appointment

Before a coil or implant fitting appointment, you will need a telephone counselling appointment with a member of the team.

This gives you an opportunity to discuss:

  • Your current contraception
  • The type of contraception you are considering
  • Your medical history
  • Any questions or concerns you may have
  • Whether the chosen method is suitable for you

The team will explain what happens next and arrange the appropriate appointment.

Please note: Completing the enquiry form does not automatically book a fitting or removal appointment. A member of the team will contact you first.

What happens at the appointment?

Your healthcare professional will talk you through the procedure and answer any questions you may have.

For a coil appointment, the device is inserted into the womb by a trained healthcare professional.

For a contraceptive implant appointment, the implant is placed just underneath the skin of the upper arm.

If you are having a coil or implant removed or replaced, the clinician will discuss the procedure with you beforehand.

You can ask questions at any stage, and your clinician will explain what to expect and any aftercare you may need.
